The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is a public organization in Canada with a mandate as a regulatory agency for broadcasting and telecommunications. It was created in 1976 when it took over responsibility for regulating telecommunication carriers.
BITS licensees are entities that the CRTC has authorized to carry telecommunications traffic between Canada and any other country. Only telecommunications providers that have a BITS license may carry traffic internationally.
Recently, the CRTC has been more active in mirroring FCC actions with regard to robocalls (STIR/SHAKEN), 911/E-911, accessibility issues, contributions to telecommunications funds in Canada, and other regulatory actions.
