On April 14, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a public Request for Information (RFI) seeking comment on how existing federal regulations may unnecessarily restrict competition. This initiative is part of a broader mandate under Executive Order 14267, which directs agencies to identify and eliminate anti-competitive regulatory barriers that stifle innovation, protect dominant incumbents, or deter new market entrants.

The FTC is calling on a broad range of stakeholders including consumers, workers, businesses, start-ups, investors, and academics to provide input on specific federal regulations that may create monopolistic conditions, limit market entry, suppress competition among entities, impose disproportionate licensing or accreditation requirements, restrict competitive bidding in government procurement, or otherwise disrupt the functioning of free markets. The FTC is particularly interested in responses that identify specific regulations and propose modifications or eliminations that would reduce the identified issues they cause while preserving the regulation’s original purpose.

Businesses impacted by outdated or protectionist regulations, as well as new market entrants struggling with compliance burdens, may find this an important opportunity to advocate for reform. Submissions can be a strategic way to raise industry-specific concerns, support regulatory modernization, and help shape future FTC actions. Comments must be submitted no later than May 27, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET through the docket on regulations.gov.
