In 2022 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established new broadband labeling requirements for internet service providers (ISPs) to ensure transparency and help consumers make informed decisions. These labels are designed to provide clear and concise information about broadband services, similar to nutrition labels on food products.

Key Deadlines

  • April 10, 2024: By this date, the majority of ISPs were required to start displaying the broadband labels on their websites and at the point of sale.
  • October 10, 2024: Providers with 100,000 or fewer subscriber lines must start displaying the broadband labels by this date.

Label Content

The broadband labels must include the following key pieces of information:

  • Service Plan Details: Information about the plan, including the monthly cost, data allowances, and any additional fees.
  • Performance Metrics: Expected download and upload speeds, latency, and other relevant performance indicators.
  • Network Management Practices: Any practices that might affect service quality, such as data throttling or prioritization.
  • Privacy and Security Policies: Details about how the provider handles customer data and what security measures are in place.

Compliance and Enforcement

The FCC will monitor compliance with these labeling requirements and may impose penalties on providers that fail to adhere to the guidelines. ISPs are encouraged to review the detailed requirements and ensure their labels are accurate and up-to-date by the specified deadlines.
