FCC Takes Steps to Remove 20 Voice Service Providers From Robocall Mitigation Database for STIR/SHAKEN Noncompliance
Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) issued 20 show cause orders seeking to remove voice service providers (“VSPs”) from the Robocall Mitigation Database for noncompliance with its STIR/SHAKEN rules. Removal from the database would require all intermediate providers and terminating voice service providers to cease accepting the removed VSPs’ traffic, effectively resulting in their calls being blocked. The noncompliant VSPs will have 14 days to cure the deficiencies in their robocall mitigation compliance or face removal from the database.
The FCC’s Enforcement Bureau Chief Loyaan Egal emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the FCC’s robocall mitigation requirements: “Compliance with these rules is fundamental to ensuring U.S. communications networks are unfriendly places for scam robocallers. Companies must actively engage in this consumer protection. Ignoring these requirements – or, far worse, supporting illegal callers and scam texters – comes with serious consequences.”
