FCC Announces Comment and Reply Comment Dates for Next Generation 911 NPRM
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced the comment and reply comment dates for the Next Generation 911 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). On July 10, 2023, the FCC released a Public Notice regarding the NPRM, which was approved on June 8, 2023. The NPRM is designed to promote the nationwide transition to Next Generation 911. The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB) has set the deadline for submitting comments as August 9, 2023, and reply comments are due by September 8, 2023.
As explained in a previous client advisory, the FCC’s proposed rules aim to establish requirements for wireline telecommunications carriers, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (I-VoIP) providers, and Internet-based telecommunications relay service (iTRS)[1] providers. These requirements will facilitate the adoption and implementation of NG911.
If you have any questions regarding the proposed rules or the broader transition to NG911, please feel free to contact Michael P. Donahue at (703) 714-1319 or mpd@commlawgroup.com.
[1] iTRS consists of video relay, Internet Protocol (IP) Relay, and IP captioned telephone services. These forms of iTRS are defined in 47 C.F.R. § 64.601.
